Lecture with Chris Danforth - Measuring the Happiness, Health, and Stories of Society through Social Media

Professor of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Vermont, Chris Danforth serves as the Director of the Vermont Advanced Computing Center and co-leads the Computational Story Lab research group at the Vermont Complex Systems Center. He has extensive experience in chaos theory applied to weather forecasting and current research on socio-technical systems and is the co-inventor of hedonometer.org, an instrument that measures daily happiness based on social media use. Danforth has also developed algorithms to identify predictors of depression from Instagram photos.

Refugee agriculture programs have been flourishing across the US for over a decade, helping to connect new arrivals to their new homes in many productive and innovative ways. Refugee farmers have adapted their existing skills and knowledge to different climates, soils and conditions while creating opportunities to sell their produce, grown culturally important crops, and strengthen their families and communities food security. Vermont has one of the oldest and most successful of these programs, New Farms for New Americans, which has farmed just over ten acres in two sites in the Intervale and Winooski Valley Park District since 2009. With strong relationships with local food organizations, the program has provided important support for newcomers to Vermont to access foods that they might otherwise not be able to obtain.

In this caf , you will explore different aspects of electrochemistry through a couple of different demonstrations and activities. Participants will first develop a hypothesis and test the concept of redox reactions - reactions in which molecules lose an electron (oxidize) or gain an electron (reduce) through exploding gummy bears. In a second hands-on activity, you will be able to create your own batteries using fruits and vegetables to powersmall lightbulbs. In the I-Corps regional course, STEM researchers and aspiring entrepreneurs get out of their comfort zone and learn from potential customers. Thursday, June 4, 2020 8:30am 3:30pm - The Vermont Procurement Technical Assistance Center (VT PTAC) is pleased to present this SBIR/STTR Virtual Classroom event on Thursday, June 4, 2020 for Vermont businesses involved in Research and Development (R&D). Technology companies eligible for non-dilutive federal funding through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs should attend this event. The two programs award $3.2 billion annually from 11 federal agencies. For one of them, the National Science Foundation, Vermont submitted only 62 applications from 2009 to 2018. There is plenty of room for growth. Lamoille County manufacturer NextGen Balancing Technologies recently received an USAF SBIR Phase 1 award. George Allen, Partner at NextGen said, The support my company received from PTAC was a major factor in our receiving an SBIR grant. I highly recommend them to all, especially those going through the process for the first time.

On behalf of the Vermont Technology Council that serves as the Statewide Board for the NSF VT EPSCoR Program I would like to share that Vermont is eligible to submit a new proposal to the National Science Foundation (NSF) Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Research Infrastructure Improvement Track-1 (RII Track-1) in July 2020[1]. NSF limits EPSCoR-eligible states to a single RII Track-1 proposal submission.

Alan Alda Communicating Science Workshop

The Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University is dedicated to helping scientists more effectively communicate with the public, with funders, with fellow scientists (and with their grandmothers!). GRANT WRITING "BROWN BAG" SEMINARS: Electronic Grant Submission: the Nuts and Bolts

Most grant applications are submitted electronically to the funding agency. Some sponsors accept applications through the Grants.gov system, and others have their own submission systems. This seminar will cover the basics of how to submit your proposal electronically, including how the UVM InfoEd system fits into the process, and who is responsible for the actual submission. This session is primarily aimed at the needs of faculty, but may be of interest to postdocs or advanced graduate students, as well as staff members involved in grant proposal development.

Climate Change Cafe presents the climate challenge deepens with Dr. Alan Betts

BRATTLEBORO The Climate Change Cafe will present, "The Climate Challenge Deepens," with Dr. Alan Betts, on Tuesday, May 23, at 6 p.m., at Brooks Memorial Library on Main Street. As always, the Cafe is free. Light refreshments will be available. Climate change is accelerating much more rapidly than scientists had predicted just a short time ago, and a recent study found that the northeast U.S. is the fastest-warming region in the contiguous 48 states. Are we prepared for the more extreme weather that is forecast for northern latitudes and New England, in particular that includes the greater frequency and intensity of 500- and 1,000-year-storms- Does our emergency preparedness deal with the "long emergency" of heat waves and flooding, health threats, food shortages, infrastructure destruction, and the influx of climate refugees from coastal cities- Are we on track towards an energy efficient, resilient future- This discussion will address both the practical issues and the change of mindset needed. Betts, of Atmospheric Research in Pittsford, is Vermont s leading climate scientist. He is a frequent speaker on climate change issues around the state, and has worked on climate change adaptation planning for Vermont. Betts is a "Weekly Planet" columnist for the weekend edition of the Rutland Herald and Barre-Montpelier Times-Argus, and has been a commentator for Vermont Public Radio. In 2016, he received the first Bert Bolin Award from the American Geophysical Union Global Environmental Change group. UVM, Tech Council, VCET to Host 12th Annual Invention 2 Venture Conference on April 6.

The University of Vermont, the Vermont Technology Council, and the Vermont Center for Emerging Technologies will host the twelfth annual Invention 2 Venture (I2V) Conference on April 6 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Dudley H. Davis Center on the UVM campus. Registration is required. ( See: https://www.regonline.com/i2v17 ) The goal of the conference is to provide an engaging setting where industry leaders can share with entrepreneurs, would-be entrepreneurs, potential investors, the private sector, researchers, government officials, and students the information and resources that have made them successful. There will be twelve roundtable sessions, with topics ranging from "Pitching and Pitch Decks" to Finding your Funding Pathway to "Design Thinking for Entrepreneurs" to "Building a Sustainable Vermont Start Up." When you register, you have the option of choosing three out of the twelve roundtable sessions. Each of the sessions is 30 minutes, with a 15-minute buffer for finishing conversations and networking between sessions. The event s keynote speaker is UVM alumnus Scott Bailey, Executive Director, North America, at MassChallenge, a non-profit startup accelerator on a mission to help entrepreneurs win without taking equity. Plant science conference takes root in Nebraska

A two-day plant science symposium will be April 6-7 at the Lincoln Marriott Cornhusker Hotel. The event theme is "Predictive Crop Design: Genome to Phenome," with speakers from the University of California at Berkeley, Duke University, and private industry including both startup and multinational companies. This conference is part of the Nebraska Research & Innovation Conference (NRIC) annual series, conducted by Nebraska EPSCoR and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). In 2016, a five-year NSF EPSCoR project established the Center for Root & Rhizobiome Innovation (CRRI): a collaboration to research crop productivity focused on plants root microbiome. CRRI scientists--from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of Nebraska at Kearney, University of Nebraska Medical Center and Doane University--aim to grow scientific knowledge that will better feed the growing population. Students and faculty interested in attending the symposium should register before March 23 at http://nric.nebraska.edu (note: deadline for discount hotel room reservations at the group rate is March 15). The UVM Student Research Conference (SRC) is a showcase of student research at every level and across every discipline within the University of Vermont. This showcase is a public event held annually in the UVM Davis Center. Students at the 2016 UVM SRC Students at the 2016 UVM SRC. CSI Seminar - Friday, October 21, 2016 2:00 to 3:00 pm - Woodward 338 Topic: Coupled impacts of climate and land use change across a river-lake continuum: insights from an integrated assessment model of Lake Champlain s Missisquoi Basin, 2000-2040 Speaker: Asim Zia, PhD, Associate Professor of Public Policy & Decision Analysis: Department of Community Development and Applied Economics & Department of Computer Science at the University of Vermont Abstract: Global climate change (GCC) will bring higher-intensity precipitation and higher-variability temperature regimes to the Northeastern United States. The interactive effects of GCC with anthropogenic land use and land cover changes (LULCC) are unknown for watershed level hydrological dynamics and nutrient fluxes to freshwater lakes. Increased nutrient fluxes can promote harmful algal blooms, also exacerbated by warmer water temperatures due to GCC. To address the complex interactions of climate, land and humans, we developed a cascading integrated assessment model to test the impacts of GCC and LULCC on the hydrological regime, water temperature, water quality, bloom duration and severity through 2040 in transnational Lake Champlain s Missisquoi Bay. Temperature and precipitation inputs were statistically down-scaled from four Global Circulation Models (GCMs) for three Representative Concentration Pathways. An agent-based model was used to generate four LULCC scenarios. Combined climate and LULCC scenarios drove a distributed hydrological model to estimate river discharge and nutrient input to the lake. Lake nutrient dynamics were simulated with a 3-D hydrodynamic-biogeochemical model. We find accelerated GCC could drastically limit land management options to maintain water quality, but the nature and severity of this impact varies dramatically by GCM and GCC scenario. Bio: Dr. Asim Zia is currently serving as an Associate Professor of Public Policy and Decision Analysis in the Department of Community Development and Applied Economics, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Computer Science, at the University of Vermont. He is Associate Director of Vermont EPSCOR, Director of the Institute for Environmental Diplomacy and Security (IEDS) and Co-Director of the Social Ecological Gaming and Simulation (SEGS) lab at the University of Vermont. Dr. Zia is undertaking NSF funded work on developing computational integrated assessment models that project and quantify high-resolution impacts of global climate change and land-use land cover change on watershed scale hydrological systems and lake systems, and their feedback on social systems. Dr. Zia has published widely on international climate policy, management of social ecological systems, risk communication, risk management, international development, tropical forest conservation, and adaptation to climate change in the US, Latin American, African and Asian contexts. He is also working on grant funded projects pertaining to mainstreaming early warning systems in development and planning processes; spatial planning, optimization and control to ensure food, energy and water security in the face of climate change induced extreme events, and designing institutions and governance networks to assess and mitigate risks from environmental, social and political drivers of change. Asim Zia has published more than forty peer-reviewed articles/book chapters and three books.

Bell Palisades Geophysical Institute/Lamont Research Professor, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University Monday, October 24, 2016, 5:00 PM Davis Auditorium, Medical Education Center Pavilion, UVM Medical Center While Antarctica is considered a desert, water is hidden beneath the ice sheet in ancient lakes and in rivers that run uphill along deep mountain valleys. On the ice surface new technologies are revealing waterfalls that tumble into the Southern Ocean. In a changing climate, each of these water systems has the potential to modulate how the massive Antarctica ice sheet responds to warming. This talk will cover exploration and discovery of Antartica s hidden hydrology. Robin Bell, an alumna of Middlebury College, has coordinated ten major expeditions to Antarctica and Greenland studying what makes ice sheets collapse. On these adventures, she has discovered a volcano beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet, several large lakes locked beneath two miles of ice, and most recently evidence that the ice sheet can thicken from below. Bell is a passionate sailor, and together with her husband has crossed the Atlantic four times. She rides an electric motorcycle. The lecture will be preceded by presentations of VASE s Vermont Science Teacher of the Year awards. The event is free, and open to the public.

SwarmFest has traditionally involved a mix of both tool-users and tool-developers, drawn from many domains of expertise. These have included, in the past, computer scientists, software engineers, biomedical researchers, ecologists, economists, political scientists, social scientists, resource management specialists and evolutionary biologists. SwarmFest represents a low-key environment for researchers to explore new ideas and approaches, and benefit from a multi-disciplinary environment. We also encourage the sharing of our experiences with attempting to gain acceptance of ABM within our own research communities, and discuss strategies where cross-domain examples/analogies can aid in that process. We will also try to identify future avenues for ABM research, including the next generation of ABM tools, platforms and applications. 2016 RACC IAM Mediated Modeling Workshop

May 11th, 2016 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Davis Center - Livak Ballroom, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT Workshop Overview:
Results from Research on Adaptation to Climate Change's (RACC's) regional climate down scaling, water sensor, hydrological, land use modeling endeavours conclude that climate change drivers are very likely to exacerbate the BGA problems in shallow bays like Missisquoi Bay, as well as deeper bays like Mallett s Bay Bay. RACC has designed an advanced computer computer simulation model that integrates land use, hydrology, and lake dynamics has been developed, allowing decision makers an opportunity to envision alternative futures for the Lake Champlain Basin. Given the State of Vermont s recent total maximum daily load (TMDL) plan and passage of Vermont s Clean Water Act a deeper understanding of the relationship between climate change, land use development and BGA blooms is needed. In this mediated modeling workshop, a small group of invited stakeholders is being asked to compare alternate visualization and communication approaches for climate change and land use change scenarios developed in the (RACC) cascading Integrated Assessment Model (IAM) to the broader watershed management community. A multi-criteria evaluation approach to compare alternate scenarios will be collaboratively developed and tested during the workshop and used to inform RACC s ongoing efforts to create useful decision support tools for the water quality and land use management networks of Vermont. Please join us for a half day workshop to learn about the RACC s IAM, see demonstrations of the IAM outputs, and begin to lay out how different scenarios generated from the IAM can be evaluated based on a set of weighted criteria to be initially determined by workshop participants.

14th Annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop

The annual Climate Prediction Applications Science Workshop (CPASW), initiated in 2002 by the NOAA National Weather Service Climate Services Division, brings together a diverse group of climate researchers, climate product producers, and climate information users to share developments in research and applications of climate predictions for societal decision-making. A unique planning team, consisting of several NOAA climate services partners, organizes and hosts CPASW at a different location each year to ensure varying climate application focuses, and both regional and national perspectives.

Vermont EPSCoR Student Research Symposium

The CWDD will host the 8th annual Student Research Symposium on Tuesday March 29th, 2016. This event showcases student research contributions to the Research on Adaptation to Climate Change (RACC) program and connects undergraduate and high school students with scientists, managers, and other interested state and local groups. RACC research is important work, and the CWDD is proud to work with so many wonderful young scientists in this effort.
